About the painting

Man of Mystery shows a woman in a white robe taking a drink from a man's hand. We see the gesture, but not the full story behind it, and that is exactly the point: the man remains a mystery, to the viewer and perhaps to her as well. Vettriano was a master of the half-told story, and this painting rests on a single, charged moment of trust or temptation.

The contrast between the white robe and the darker surroundings gives the image a strong focus. It suits a bedroom or living room, and it is a favourite with collectors who enjoy the more intimate, narrative side of his work.

Before you buy

Worth a look before you commit: our buying guide, our guide to certificates of authenticity, and our piece on whether Vettriano prints hold their value.

Framing, display and care

As a fine art giclée, this print is made with archival pigment inks on acid-free fine art paper, which is what allows a limited edition like this to keep its colour for decades. To protect that, frame it with an acid-free mount and UV-filtering glass, and hang it out of direct sunlight. Steady conditions matter more than anything else: a dry interior wall is ideal, while bathrooms, kitchens and the space above a radiator are best avoided. If you are not framing straight away, store the print flat, in its protective packaging, somewhere cool and dry, and only handle it by the edges. A good framer will be able to advise on moulding and mount colour to suit the image and the room.

Our promise

Authenticity matters more than anything when you buy a limited edition, which is why every print we supply comes with a certificate of authenticity and is sent with fully insured UK delivery. International delivery is available on enquiry. As an official stockist we can tell you exactly what you are buying, and we are glad to talk through edition details, framing or delivery before you commit.

About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.

Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
