About the painting

The Sailor's Toy is a recent addition to the body of Jack Vettriano prints, published after the artist's death in March 2025 as an official posthumous edition. The title has the wry, double-edged quality Vettriano liked, hinting at a story between two people while leaving the viewer to decide what has really happened. That is how his best work operates: a single moment, staged as carefully as a film still, where the clothes, the setting and the body language suggest far more than they show.

As a smaller-format image, The Sailor's Toy suits the kind of space where it will be seen up close, such as a study, a hallway or a bedroom wall. It sits comfortably next to his other intimate compositions, and for collectors building a Vettriano wall, it is an accessible way to add a recently published image to an existing group.

About this edition

This is a posthumous limited edition of just 100, released with the authority of the Estate of Jack Vettriano. Because the artist can no longer sign new work, each print is numbered and embossed with the Estate's official stamp instead of a pencil signature. That stamp is the mark of authenticity for posthumous editions, and together with the edition number and the certificate of authenticity it records exactly where your print sits in the run. It is printed on 300gsm museum etching paper, with an image size of 25.5 x 20.4 cm and a mount size of 48 x 42.4 cm.

Framing, display and care

This posthumous edition is printed on 300gsm museum etching paper, a weighty cotton stock with a gentle texture that gives the image depth and holds pigment ink for generations. To protect it, frame it with an acid-free mount and backing board and UV-filtering glazing, and hang it on a dry wall away from direct sunlight, radiators and steamy rooms. Each print carries the embossed stamp of the Estate of Jack Vettriano, so ask your framer to position the mount so that the stamp and the edition number are protected and, if you prefer, still visible. Until it is framed, keep the print flat in its packaging and handle it only by the edges.

About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.

Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
