About the painting

The Sparrow and the Hawk is one of Vettriano's most theatrical paintings. A masked man and a woman are pictured in a richly furnished room, beside a desk and a classical bust, and the title casts them as predator and prey, though it is not entirely clear which is which. Masks, disguise and role-play run through his later work, and this painting is one of the most memorable examples, with the feel of a scene from a period drama or a masquerade.

Its sumptuous setting and strong sense of narrative make it a natural focal point. It suits a living room, library or dining room, anywhere a painting with a story can hold its own.

About this edition

Published in 2013, this is a signed limited edition giclée of 250 prints plus 25 Artist's Proofs. Each print is signed and numbered by Jack Vettriano and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. It is printed on 350gsm museum etching paper, a heavier stock than many of his editions, with a mount size of 84.5 x 73.7 cm, which gives it considerable presence on the wall. Editions from more than a decade ago are increasingly sought after now that no new signed prints can be made.

Framing, display and care

This edition is printed on heavyweight museum etching paper, a soft, textured cotton stock chosen because it holds pigment ink with depth and stays stable for generations when it is looked after. If you are framing it yourself, ask your framer for an acid-free mount and backing board and for UV-filtering glazing; conservation or museum glass is worth the extra cost on a signed print. Hang it away from direct sunlight, and avoid bathrooms, kitchens and the wall above a radiator, where heat and damp can cockle the paper over time. When the print arrives, handle it by the edges with clean, dry hands and keep it flat in its packaging until it goes to the framer.

About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.
