The Sailor's Toy: A Posthumous Limited Edition
The Sailor's Toy is an oil on canvas (30 x 24in), shown in Between Darkness and Dawn, Jack Vettriano's exhibition that ran from 10 June to 10 July 1998 (catalogue no.16). The original painting has since sold and is no longer available.

This edition
This is a posthumous limited edition, released by the Estate of Jack Vettriano — issued after the artist's death in March 2025. It's produced on 300gsm Museum Etching paper, in an edition of 100, numbered and embossed with the official stamp of the Estate. Image size 25.5 x 20.4cm, mount 48 x 42.4cm, with a certificate of authenticity included.
About the painting
A woman in a sailor's jacket and stockings sits in the foreground of a cabin-like room, while a man in shirt and braces stands behind her, looking away. The title has the wry, double-edged quality Vettriano liked, hinting at who is playing with whom.
Like his best work, it is a single moment staged as carefully as a film still, where clothes, setting and body language suggest far more than they show.
Framing and display
Every print we supply comes with a certificate of authenticity. If you are framing it yourself, our guide to framing a limited edition print explains what to ask your framer for, and our print care guide covers where to hang it and how to keep it in good condition.
