About the painting

Just the Way It Is is one of Vettriano's frank, unadorned figure studies: a nude woman seated on a chair, painted without pretence or apology. The title sums up its directness, presenting the body simply as it is. Vettriano drew on a long tradition of the seated nude in Western painting, giving it his own clean lines and cinematic lighting.

It is a calm, confident image rather than a provocative one, and it suits a bedroom or private study.

Before you buy

A bit of background for new collectors — our buying guide, our certificate of authenticity guide, and our investment guide — before you decide on this one.

Framing, display and care

The edition is printed on Hahnemühle mould-made paper, one of the most respected fine art papers in the world. Hahnemühle has been making paper in Germany since the sixteenth century, and its mould-made stock is acid-free and made for archival printing, with a gentle surface texture that gives Vettriano's colours a soft, painterly finish. To keep it at its best, frame it with an acid-free mount and UV-filtering glass, hang it on a dry wall away from direct sun, and avoid rooms with fluctuating heat or humidity. Handle the sheet only by its edges, and if you need to store it before framing, keep it flat and interleaved with acid-free tissue.

As an official stockist we can tell you exactly what you are buying, and we are glad to talk through edition details, framing or delivery before you commit.

About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.

Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
