About the painting
Portrait in Black and Pearl is one of Vettriano's most elegant single-figure paintings. A woman in a cloche hat and fur collar is pictured with the poise of a society portrait from the 1920s or 1930s, the era whose fashions and manners he loved to recreate. The black and the pearls of the title set the palette: restrained, polished and glamorous, with the face as the point of focus.
Vettriano painted many women, but his formal portraits have a special stillness compared with his more narrative scenes. Here there is no second figure and no implied drama, just presence and style. It is the kind of picture that suits a formal room, a dining room or a bedroom, and it pairs well with his other portraits of women.

Before you buy
Worth a look before you commit: our buying guide, our guide to certificates of authenticity, and our piece on whether Vettriano prints hold their value.
Framing, display and care
This edition is printed on heavyweight museum etching paper, a soft, textured cotton stock chosen because it holds pigment ink with depth and stays stable for generations when it is looked after. If you are framing it yourself, ask your framer for an acid-free mount and backing board and for UV-filtering glazing; conservation or museum glass is worth the extra cost on a signed print. Hang it away from direct sunlight, and avoid bathrooms, kitchens and the wall above a radiator, where heat and damp can cockle the paper over time. When the print arrives, handle it by the edges with clean, dry hands and keep it flat in its packaging until it goes to the framer.

About Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.
Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
