About the painting
On Parade shows Vettriano's gift for the dramatic entrance. A woman in a striking red jacket steps through a doorway, and the painting is all about the moment of arrival: the confidence of the pose, the strong colour against a darker setting, and the sense that she knows exactly the effect she is having. The title suggests display, performance and the pleasure of being seen.
Red is one of the colours Vettriano used most effectively, often to draw the eye to a single figure in an otherwise restrained palette, and On Parade is a bold example. It is a picture with presence, which makes it a natural focal point for a hallway, a dining room or any wall where you want a painting to make a statement.

About this edition
On Parade was published in 2008 as a limited edition giclée of 250 prints, each signed and numbered by Jack Vettriano and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. It is a large print, with an image size of 63.5 x 50.5 cm and a mounted size of 88.5 x 73.5 cm, and this example comes framed in a dark frame, as pictured. Editions published nearly two decades ago are increasingly hard to find in good condition, which is reflected in its price.

Before you buy

Framing, display and care
As a fine art giclée, this print is made with archival pigment inks on acid-free fine art paper, which is what allows a limited edition like this to keep its colour for decades. To protect that, frame it with an acid-free mount and UV-filtering glass, and hang it out of direct sunlight. Steady conditions matter more than anything else: a dry interior wall is ideal, while bathrooms, kitchens and the space above a radiator are best avoided. If you are not framing straight away, store the print flat, in its protective packaging, somewhere cool and dry, and only handle it by the edges. A good framer will be able to advise on moulding and mount colour to suit the image and the room.

About Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.
Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
