Summer Days Triptych by Jack Vettriano | Open Edition Giclée Prints
Before the hotel rooms and the late-night bars, Jack Vettriano made his name with the beach. The Summer Days Triptych brings together three paintings from 1993, when his reputation was growing quickly, and they are among the happiest pictures he ever painted.
The three paintings
The triptych is made up of Green & Blue, Pink & Saffron and Trailing Toes, all painted in 1993. Each shows women by the sea in light summer dresses, walking along the water's edge or resting on the sand, with parasols against the sun. The titles come from the colours of the dresses, and seen together the three images read like scenes from the same long summer's day.
The beach was one of Vettriano's favourite stages. The flat sand and empty horizon strip a scene back to its essentials, so that everything depends on the figures, their clothes and the light. It is the same setting he used for The Singing Butler and Mad Dogs, but here the mood is relaxed and carefree, with none of the tension of his night scenes.
Why an open edition?
Unlike most of the prints we sell, the Summer Days Triptych is a Special Open Edition rather than a numbered limited edition. That means the prints are not hand-numbered and the run is not fixed, which keeps the price well below that of a signed limited edition.
For many people that is exactly the point. If you love Vettriano's work and want something beautiful on the wall, rather than an investment, an open edition is a sensible, affordable place to start. If you are weighing the two, our guide to limited editions, open editions and Artist's Proofs sets out the differences clearly.
