What the painting shows
A woman stands at a tall window in a loosely tied cream silk robe, her dark hair pinned up, a mug in her hand. Outside, the light is fading over the sea, and a single lamp is lit on the promenade. She is looking out and down, as if watching someone walk away.
The title sounds breezy, almost flippant, and her pose matches it: hand on hip, unhurried, in no rush to follow. But Vettriano rarely lets a scene be that simple. Is she relieved, or hurt, or already planning what comes next? The painting gives her the last word and keeps her thoughts to herself.
Exhibition history
Baby, Bye Bye is an oil on canvas, first exhibited in Affairs of the Heart, Jack Vettriano's exhibition that ran from 19 June to 31 July 2004, where it was catalogue number seven. The original painting has since been sold and is no longer available.
