What the painting shows
A woman stands with her back to us, her dark hair curled, wearing a black corset and stockings, her hands on her hips. A man in a dark suit and red tie leans close beside her, his face turned towards her as if to speak. The room is dark and warm, with a framed picture glowing on the wall behind them.
The word "ritual" changes everything. This is not a first encounter or a surprise; it is something they have done before and will do again. The interest lies in the small shift of power in the moment: she is still, composed and in charge, and he is the one leaning in.
A late release
Evening of Ritual was released on 25 November 2022, one of the last limited editions to appear in Vettriano's lifetime. It belongs to the same intimate, theatrical strand of his work as The Red Room Collection, and it is offered in a deliberately small edition.
