Posthumous Jack Vettriano Prints: Estate Stamps, Signatures and What They Mean

Posthumous Jack Vettriano prints are editions released after his death in March 2025. Most are numbered and embossed with the official stamp of the Estate of Jack Vettriano instead of a signature, while a handful of previously unreleased editions were hand-signed by Vettriano himself before he died.

Young Hearts by Jack Vettriano

Both are genuine, authorised editions. They simply differ in how they are marked, and it helps to understand the difference before you buy.

Why posthumous editions exist

Jack Vettriano died in his apartment in Nice on 1 March 2025, aged 73. During his lifetime, limited edition prints of his work were hand-signed in pencil and numbered, and that signature was a large part of their appeal.

After an artist dies, demand for their work does not stop. Many collectors still want to own new images, or images that were never previously published as prints. Posthumous editions allow that, while making it clear that the artist could not personally sign them. Our post on Jack Vettriano's legacy looks at what his passing means for collectors more broadly.

Estate-stamped editions

The most common type of posthumous print carries the official stamp of the Estate of Jack Vettriano. This is embossed into the paper, in place of a pencil signature, and each print is numbered within its edition.

Two examples we currently stock:

  • Young Hearts: a posthumous edition of 100 plus 10 Studio Proofs, on museum etching paper, with an image size of 39 x 30.7 cm. At the time of writing it is £560.

  • The Sailor's Toy: a posthumous edition of 100 on etching paper. At the time of writing it is £535.

Young Hearts is interesting because it includes Studio Proofs. Selected posthumous Estate editions have them: a very small number of proofs from the same run, marked S/P rather than numbered in the main edition.

Pre-signed editions: Narcissistic Bathers

A smaller group of posthumous releases are different. These are previously unreleased editions that Vettriano hand-signed before his death, which have only been published since.

Narcissistic Bathers is one of them. It was released in September 2026 by Jack Vettriano Publishing in an edition of 125 plus 15 Artist's Proofs, on etching paper at 38 x 31 cm. At the time of writing it is £660.

So although it was released after his death, each print carries his own signature. You can read more in our post on Narcissistic Bathers.

Please note that our Narcissistic Bathers listing cannot be shipped to EU countries or Northern Ireland, because of the EU General Product Safety Regulation. If you are outside Great Britain, please contact us before ordering.

How to read a posthumous print

When you look at a posthumous Vettriano print, check for the following:

  • The edition number, written as a fraction such as 45/100. The second figure is the size of the main edition.

  • The proof marking, if any. An Artist's Proof is marked AP, and a Studio Proof is marked S/P, rather than numbered within the main run.

  • The estate stamp, an embossed mark in the paper on estate editions.

  • A pencil signature, on editions he signed before his death.

  • The certificate of authenticity, which should match the title, edition and number on the print.

If anything is unclear, ask the seller to confirm what you are buying before you pay. Our guide to the certificate of authenticity explains what that document should include.

Value considerations

It is natural to ask whether a posthumous print is worth more or less than one signed in his lifetime. The honest answer is that nobody can say for certain.

As a general rule in the print market, a work signed by the artist is often valued more highly than an estate-stamped one, because the signature is a direct link to the artist. That said, prices are driven by many things: the image itself, its popularity, the edition size, condition and whether the edition has sold out.

What we can say

  • Estate editions are authorised and fully legitimate, not reproductions.

  • Pre-signed editions like Narcissistic Bathers offer a genuine signature on a newly released image, which is unusual.

  • Once any edition sells out from the publisher, examples are only available second-hand, and prices then reflect demand and scarcity.

We would never suggest buying a print purely as an investment. Buy the image you love. Our article Is Jack Vettriano a good investment? discusses this in more depth.

Avoiding overclaims

Because posthumous editions are relatively new, you may see sellers describe them loosely. Be wary of any listing that calls an estate-stamped print "hand-signed", or that cannot tell you whether a signature is a lifetime signature or an estate stamp.

A reputable seller should be able to tell you exactly how the print is marked, the edition size and whether proofs exist.
