About the painting

Young Hearts takes Vettriano back to the setting he made his own: the beach. A couple are pictured together by the sea, and the painting has the mix of romance and nostalgia that runs through so much of his work. Vettriano grew up on the Fife coast, and the shoreline appears again and again in his paintings, often as a stage where people dress up, dance or simply wait, under skies that seem to be holding their breath.

The title suggests first love, or at least the memory of it, and the image has the gentle, wistful mood of his beach scenes rather than the darker, noir tension of his interiors. It is the kind of picture people buy because it reminds them of someone, which is perhaps why Vettriano's beach paintings have always been among his most loved.

Before you buy

Our complete buying guide covers what to look for, our certificate of authenticity guide explains what should come with every signed print, and our investment guide looks at what actually drives value.

Framing, display and care

This posthumous edition is printed on 300gsm museum etching paper, a weighty cotton stock with a gentle texture that gives the image depth and holds pigment ink for generations. To protect it, frame it with an acid-free mount and backing board and UV-filtering glazing, and hang it on a dry wall away from direct sunlight, radiators and steamy rooms. Each print carries the embossed stamp of the Estate of Jack Vettriano, so ask your framer to position the mount so that the stamp and the edition number are protected and, if you prefer, still visible. Until it is framed, keep the print flat in its packaging and handle it only by the edges.
