About the painting
The Singing Butler is the painting that made Jack Vettriano a household name. A couple dance on a wet, windswept beach in evening dress while a butler and a maid hold umbrellas over them against the weather. It is romantic, theatrical and faintly absurd all at once, and it has become one of the most recognised images in British art.
Its story is part of its appeal. When it was first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1992, it was turned down for purchase. As a reproduction print, however, it went on to become the best-selling art print in the UK, outselling Dalí, Monet and Van Gogh. Framing, display and care
As a fine art giclée, this print is made with archival pigment inks on acid-free fine art paper, which is what allows a limited edition like this to keep its colour for decades. To protect that, frame it with an acid-free mount and UV-filtering glass, and hang it out of direct sunlight. Steady conditions matter more than anything else: a dry interior wall is ideal, while bathrooms, kitchens and the space above a radiator are best avoided. If you are not framing straight away, store the print flat, in its protective packaging, somewhere cool and dry, and only handle it by the edges. A good framer will be able to advise on moulding and mount colour to suit the image and the room.

About Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.
Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
