About the painting

Baby, Bye Bye shows a woman in a robe, holding a mug and looking out of a window. It is the morning after, or perhaps the morning of a departure, and the title, with its echo of a pop song farewell, tells us someone has gone or is about to. The domestic setting and quiet pose make it one of Vettriano's most relatable images: a private moment of reflection that anyone who has said goodbye will recognise.

Published in 2015, it belongs to the later period of his work, when his paintings often became more intimate and understated. It suits a bedroom, kitchen or sitting room.

About this edition

Framing, display and care

This edition is printed on heavyweight museum etching paper, a soft, textured cotton stock chosen because it holds pigment ink with depth and stays stable for generations when it is looked after. If you are framing it yourself, ask your framer for an acid-free mount and backing board and for UV-filtering glazing; conservation or museum glass is worth the extra cost on a signed print. Hang it away from direct sunlight, and avoid bathrooms, kitchens and the wall above a radiator, where heat and damp can cockle the paper over time. When the print arrives, handle it by the edges with clean, dry hands and keep it flat in its packaging until it goes to the framer.

About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews in 1951 and grew up in Methil, Fife. He left school at sixteen and taught himself to paint, studying the works in Kirkcaldy's gallery after being given a set of watercolours for his twenty-first birthday. When he sent two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition in 1988, both sold on the first day, and his career as a professional painter began.

Vettriano's paintings are known for their cinematic atmosphere: men and women in evening dress, beaches under heavy skies, quiet rooms where something has just happened or is about to. He was appointed OBE in 2003, and a major retrospective of his work was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow in 2013 and 2014.
