About the painting
The Blue Gown is one of Vettriano's most intimate compositions. A woman stands before a mirror holding a blue gown, caught in a private moment of choosing, or perhaps of deciding whether to go out at all. The rich blue of the dress against the darker tones of the room gives the image its focus, and the mirror adds the layer of looking and being looked at that runs through so much of his work.
Vettriano returned often to the dressing room and the boudoir, where his figures prepare for an evening whose outcome we never see. These pictures are less about glamour than about anticipation, and The Blue Gown is one of the finest examples. It has become one of the most popular images in our collection, and our dedicated blog post explores it in more detail.

Framing, display and care
As a fine art giclée, this print is made with archival pigment inks on acid-free fine art paper, which is what allows a limited edition like this to keep its colour for decades. To protect that, frame it with an acid-free mount and UV-filtering glass, and hang it out of direct sunlight. Steady conditions matter more than anything else: a dry interior wall is ideal, while bathrooms, kitchens and the space above a radiator are best avoided. If you are not framing straight away, store the print flat, in its protective packaging, somewhere cool and dry, and only handle it by the edges. A good framer will be able to advise on moulding and mount colour to suit the image and the room.
