The Very Thought of You by Jack Vettriano | Signed Limited Edition Print
Jack Vettriano loved the songs of the 1930s and 40s, and many of his titles borrow from them. The Very Thought of You takes its name from one of the great romantic standards, first recorded by Ray Noble's orchestra in 1934 and sung by everyone from Bing Crosby to Nat King Cole.
What the painting shows
A woman with dark, shoulder-length hair sits on the arm of a sofa by a tall window, wrapped in a long dark coat. Daylight pours through the net curtains, and she turns her face towards it, eyes half closed. Is she about to leave, or has she just come home? Is she waiting for someone, or remembering them?
The song gives us a clue. It is about someone so caught up in thoughts of another person that everything else fades away, and that is exactly the mood here. The painting is all stillness and anticipation, with the bright window doing the work of a spotlight.
Vettriano's quieter side
People often think of Vettriano as a painter of glamour and drama, but some of his most affecting pictures are portraits of a single figure lost in thought. The Very Thought of You belongs with those, alongside In Thoughts Of You, which shares both its theme and its quiet, light-filled palette.
