The Proposal: The Story Behind Jack Vettriano's Painting
The Proposal shows a couple embracing beneath a black umbrella — a romantic image that recalls the umbrellas of The Singing Butler while telling its own, smaller story.

The Story Behind the Painting
The title tells us what has just happened, or is about to: a question asked, an answer given. Umbrellas recur throughout Jack Vettriano's work, sheltering his couples from the weather and the world at once, and here the motif becomes the frame for a moment of commitment. It's one of the most popular choices for anniversaries, engagements and weddings, and its romance makes it a natural fit for a bedroom or living room.
This Edition
The Proposal was published in 2017 as a limited edition giclée, signed and numbered by Jack Vettriano and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. The overall size is 620 x 660mm. As one of the later editions published in his lifetime, it's part of a body of work that's now permanently closed. Because examples come to us individually, we quote prices on application.
