About the painting
The Blue Gown is one of Vettriano's most private pictures. A woman in a blue gown stands with her back to us, studying her reflection before an evening we never get to see. The strong blue against the darker room draws the eye straight to her, and the mirror adds the idea of looking and being looked at that runs through so much of his work.
Vettriano returned again and again to the dressing room, where his figures get ready for a night out. These paintings are less about glamour than about anticipation, and The Blue Gown is one of the best of them.
