About the painting

A man in spectacles and a jumper bearing a large number seven stands reading from a book, a framed picture on the wall behind him. It is an unusually personal, informal image for Vettriano, far from the evening dress and dance halls of his best-known work.

The number seven, traditionally the lucky one, gives the title a hopeful ring. As a smaller image it suits a study, a landing or a group of other Vettriano prints.
