About the painting
Beautiful Dreamer shows a woman in a black dress by a window, lost in her own thoughts. The title comes from the nineteenth-century parlour song, and Vettriano uses it with real tenderness. Many of his finest paintings are quiet portraits of women alone, waiting, remembering or daydreaming, and this is one of the most admired.
The window light and the stillness of the pose give it a calm, reflective mood. It is a large print, so its atmosphere can fill a wall in a bedroom, living room or reading corner.
